LowCost Holidays Goes Bust – travel firm based in Spain leaves 140,000 holiday makers in the lurch
LowCost Holidays Goes Bust
Budget holiday company LowCost Holidays goes bust. The news hit on Friday 15th July, following months of emergency talks to try and rescue the company which was still trading online just hours before the announcement. 27,000 people are currently on holiday with the company, and another 110,000 have booked but no yet travelled.
Bookings made through Lowcosttravelgroup Ltd, Lowcostholidays Spain, Hoteling.com and Lowcostbeds.com A.G. are affected by the closure.
Already On Holiday
If you are already on holiday, your flights home should remain valid as the airline would have been paid at the time of booking. It is possible that your hotel may charge you for additional nights, transfers, and car hire as they may not have received payment from Lowcost Holidays. If this happens, keep the receipts as you will need them to claim the money back from your travel insurer.
You may also be able to claim back money from Govern de les illes Balears, the Spanish travel regulator Their website is here.
Booked But Not Travelled
If you have already booked your holiday with Lowcost Holidays but not yet travelled, your fights will almost certainly still be valid. Hotel reservations however may not be honoured. You should contact your insurer to find out if you are entitled to a refund or an alternative booking.
Credit Card Refund
If you paid for your holiday with a credit card in the UK, contact your card provider. You will be entitled to a refund of all your holiday expenses over 100 pounds under section 75 of the consumer credit act.
Debit Card Refund
Banks are not obligated to offer a refund if you paid with a debit card, however most do offer a chargeback scheme, where they may be able to recover your money from the retailer´s bank. Contact your bank as soon as possible and request a chargeback.
Travel Insurance
You may be entitled to a refund from your travel insurance provider. However, many policies won´t cover you for the failure of a travel firm unless you have specifically bought that cover. Contact your insurer as soon as possible to find out what you are entitled to.
ABTA and ATOL
Because Lowcost Holidays were based in Spain, they were not covered by ABTA or ATOL. Your holiday is not protected by these organisations.
