Malaga Taxi Strike Leaves Thousands Stranded – drivers called a snap strike during the Feria and have now been joined by taxi drivers throughout Andalucia
Malaga Taxi Strike Leaves Thousands Stranded
Malaga taxi drivers called a snap strike over the weekend in protest at an increased number of Cabify drivers operating in the area. Cabify is a service similar to Uber. 80 Cabify drivers were brought in from other areas, which angered local taxi drivers. They demanded talks with the Mayor, and called a strike when a solution wasn’t reached. This left feria revellers stranded after the event.
Malaga Airport
Taxi drivers in other parts of Andalucia have now joined the strike action, include the drivers who service the airport. This has left thousands of tourists stranded and unable to reach their hotels. The airport are now providing extra busses, and hotels are laying on additional shuttle services to try and ease the congestion.
Taxi services in Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, Estepona, Manilva, Benahavis and Casares are operating with only half of their drivers.
Resolution
There is no sign of the strikes ending at the moment. A union representative said that either the fees which taxi drivers have to pay for licensing must be scrapped (Cabify drivers are not subject to the same licensing and fees), or Cabify must stop operating. He said that he regrets that customers are suffering.
