Flying Police In Marbella – police will be using propeller backpacks to fly at heights between 150 and 300 meters
Flying Police In Marbella
Police in Marbella and San Pedro are now using flying technology which has already been trialled successfully in other European cities. The giant propeller packs are strapped to the police officer’s back, and enable the user to reach heights of up to 300 meters. The engines can run for around five hours, reaching speeds of 45 kph.
The new unit is currently made up of two officers who are fully trained in flight operations. They will be patrolling the 27 kilometres of coastline, assisting with mountain rescues, and monitoring landfills and construction sites. The security councillor has said that financially these new units make more sense at €6000 each than military style drones, which would cost €60,000 each.
The new flying police are getting a mixed reaction from the public though. John Sanderson who lives in Marbella said “It’s a bit like something from a Bond film, or the Thunderbirds. If it helps keep crime levels down then I’m all for it” but Maria Crosby from Estepona said “We need more police on the ground, not in the air”.
