New Animal Protection Laws Proposed In Andalucia
The Junta de Andalucia is seeking to introduce new laws to improve animal welfare in the region. The laws would prevent mutilating animals for aesthetic purposes, and training animals to be aggresive and to fight. The preliminary draft of the Andalusian Animal Welfare Law will be submitted to the region’s highest court in Seville.
The new law would make it illegal to abandon a domestic animal, and prevent the “mistreatment or submission to any practice that may cause them unjustified suffering or damage”.
Keeping Pets In Suitable Conditions
The conditions in which animals are kept will be addressed by the new laws, which include clauses about housing animals “in inadequate facilities”. It would also become illegal to keep animals “tied or permanently locked up on terraces, balconies, cellars, rooftops, storage rooms, basements, garages and the like or in conditions that may cause suffering or harm to the animal”.
Fines of up to €35,000 would be imposed upon anyone breaching the new animal welfare laws. Minor offenses would be dealth with by fines between €300 and €1000.
