Spain Announces Landmark Animal Rights Ruling

The Partido Popular has submitted a change to Spain’s civil code which will recognise pets as “beings” instead of “objects”.  This landmark change is being praised by animal rights activists and has been welcomed by animal charities on the Costa Del Sol.

Some of the changes will include animals no longer being passed to family members automatically as an inheritance, and bailiffs will no longer be able to seize pets in financial disputes.

The Parliamentary Association in Defense of the Rights of Animals has described the new law as ‘a historic step’.
