Christmas Light Displays Could Be Delayed
The Junta de Andalucia are considering forcing local authorities to delay Christmas lights switch on events, in a bid to save energy and money. The proposal will recommend delaying the events until the 22nd of December, though there would be some flexibility allowing for local councils to begin displaying Christmas lights from the 8th December. The proposed rule change would also mean that Christmas lights are switched off overnight.
Bad For Employment, Retail, and Hospitality
Local government in Malaga have agreed to abide by the rules if they are confirmed, whilst stressing that delaying the Christmas lights in the city would be bad news for the economy. Teresa Porras is the minister responsible for festivals, she says “It would be bad for employment, retail and the hospitality sector”. The Christmas lights attract tourist and local visitors to Malaga, especially around the public holidays on the 6th and 8th December.
