Rare Iberian Lynx Killed In Forest Fires – a 14 year old female has died after conservation experts were forced to release adults into the wild

Rare Iberian Lynx Killed In Forest Fires

Forest fires have been raging in Huelva over the weekend.  An endangered Iberian lynx has died after being released into the wild.  Conservation teams tried desperately to rehome the animals in the protection programme, the young were relocated to another centre but the adults had to be released into the wild to fend for themselves.  It’s thought that the stress of the situation contributed to the death of the 14 year old female lynx.

Young animals have been relocated to another conservation centre

Ten years ago the Iberian Lynx had been hunted almost to extinction, with only 94 remaining.  The breeding and  conservation programme has more than tripled those numbers, and is integral to the EU’s breeding programme.

550 fire fighters have been battling the blaze in Huelva which began on Saturday night.  The fires have threatened the national park at Donana.  2000 people had to be evacuated from their homes, and over 400 remain in temporary accommodation.  The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but experts are not ruling out arson.
