Fiesta De La Sardina

On the 1st May La Cala de Mijas celebrates its annual Fiesta De La Sardina, and it’s the perfect way to spend the bank holiday. Whether you’re a local or just visiting the coast, here is everything you need to know about the most delicious day on the La Cala calendar.

The festival celebrates the humble espeto—sardines skewered on bamboo sticks and grilled over open olive-wood fires in old fishing boats on the sand. It’s a tradition that goes back generations.

The main action happens at the Torreón (The Watchtower) in the center of La Cala.   Things usually get going at midday.  While every chiringuito will be busy, the town hall are providing 600 kilos of skewered sardines!

Along with the fabulous food, there’ll be drinks and entertainment with local musicians and dancers.
