100 People Join Demonstration Against Mijas Donkey Taxis.

More than 100 people came together today to protest against the use of donkey taxis in Mijas. Protesters carried banners and placards demanding an end to cruel working conditions for the donkeys, and calling for tourists to boycott the attraction.

The demonstration was organised by local activist Anne Blitz who also runs a Facebook group calling for improved working conditions for the animals in Mijas.  Át the weekend a British man was allegedly assaulted by one of the donkey taxi operators whilst filming the animals working in extreme temperatures.

Guardia Civil officers were present to keep the peace, and separate the protesters from a counter demonstration by those who support the activities of the donkey taxis.  They drowned out speeches by the animal rights activists with boos and jeers.  No arrests were made during the protest.

Donkeys And Horses Cannot Work in Extreme Heat

Mijas Town Hall introduced a rule on the 5th August requiring donkey taxis and horse drawn carriage services to be reduced in extreme heat “with the aim of protecting the health and welfare of both the drivers and animals”.  The order prevents the operation of the donkey taxis during amber or red heat warnings.  During a yellow weather warning the animals must not work between 2pm and 6pm
