22000 Cigarette Butts Cleaned From Costa Del Sol Beach
Volunteers in La Linea have collected more than 22,000 cigarette butts from the beach. They were taking part in World Clean Up Day. The volunteers, from Ecologistas en Accion , were collecting the butts in water bottles.
Contaminated Water
A spokesperson said “One butt contaminates eight litres of water. 22,500 cigarette butts have been collected in three hours at La Linea de la Concepcion on the streets and beaches. We have avoided contaminating 180,000 litres of water today”.
Environmental groups are urging smokers to dispose of cigarette ends safely, and not to discard them onto the beach and streets.
