Costa Del Sol Power Cuts. Electricity is off in most of Spain and Portugal. Road and rail networks affected. Mobile phone networks down. Disruption at Malaga Airport.
Costa Del Sol Power Cuts
Update
17.35 – Some parts of Malaga city and Alhaurin reportedly now have power.
16.45 – Power cuts caused by “rare atmospheric phenomenon” according to Portuguese energy company REN (Rede Eletrica Nacional). Their statement says“due to extreme temperature variations in the interior of Spain, there were anomalous oscillations in the very high voltage lines (400 KV), a phenomenon known as ‘induced atmospheric vibrations. These oscillations caused synchronisation failures between the electrical systems, leading to successive disturbances across the interconnected European network.” Red Eléctrica Española have not responded to this explanation.
16.15 – Power will be restored in 6 to 10 hours. Red Eléctrica Española have successfully started to return voltage to the power network. Eduardo Prieto the Director of Operational Services says the situation is “exceptional and completely extraordinary”.
14.20 – Red Eléctrica Española, Spain’s electricity network, have confirmed that power is slowly being restored accross the country. No time frame for bringing power to the Costa Del Sol has yet been announced.
Spain Suffers Nationwide Power Cut
Most of Spain and some parts of Portugal have been affected by a massive power cut. Endesa are blaming Red Eléctrica Española, Spain’s electricity network for the blackout. The power went off at 12.30pm today, causing major disruption on the Costa Del Sol.
Rail Network Down
Most train services have been cancelled. Trains are currently stranded on the lines. Motorists are being affected by traffic lights not functioning, local Police are directing drivers on main roads and closing minor routes. The airport and hospitals are operating on backup power with minor disruption
The cause of the power cut is unkown.
