E-Scooter Riders Facing Fines Up To €1000
Spain’s traffic authority is reminding electric scooter riders that they are facing fines up to €1000 if they don’t follow the rules. A recent survey shows that more than 50% of electric scooter riders are unaware of the legal requirements and regulations, and regularly put themselves and other road users at risk.
Electric Scooter Laws In Spain
The DGT says that it’s illegal to ride on pavements, in pedestrian areas, on pedestrian crossings, on motorways, dual carriageways, and through tunnels in urban areas. Travelling speeds must be between 6 lm/h and 25 km/h and electric scooters must have a braking system, a bell, front and rear lights, and reflectors.
Electric scooter riders are also subject to the same drink and drug laws as other motorists. It’s also illegal to use a mobile phone or wear ear phones whilst riding an electric scooter in Spain.
