Great Train Robber Dies In Spain
Gordon Goody, the mastermind behind the Great Train Robbery, has died of a heart attack at his home in Mojocar, Almeria where he has been running a bar called Kon Tiki. He was 87 years old.
He was the man behind the theft of 2.6 million pounds, which at the time was the largest heist on a British train in history. Most of the money was never recovered.
Goody was born in Ireland, but moved to London where he grew up. He moved to Spain in 1975 after serving 12 years of his 30 year sentence. He learned Spanish whilst in jail.
In an interview in 2014, Goody said: “My old man wanted me to be a plumber’s mate. I wanted to be a criminal. You never have to work hard to be a criminal.
“You do something, see something, you’ve no money, you take it. I was always a thief, never a gangster.”
