Exercise your Right!  Make your Vote Count!

Here on Mijas Costa, almost 40% of the population is non-Spaniard.  That’s a significant number of ‘political clout’ and one you are – or perhaps, should be – part of.

Voting does matter.  It does make a difference.  We have no real right to complain if we don’t take the time to vote.

Mijas Municipal Elections, May 26th 2019

If you are a Euorpean Citizen you are able to vote in Municipal Elections. Arrangements are being made in London and Madrid for this right to be maintained for British citizens after Brexit, regardless of the outcome.

In order to vote you need to ensure two things.

  1. Firstly, you need to be on the Municipal Register, the Padrón.  If you are not yet registered on the Padrón, this is a very nice website, explaining exactly how to do it.
  2. Second, you will need to register separately to vote. Being on the Padrón alone does not give you the right to vote.  Go to one of the town halls in Mijas Pueblo, Las Lagunas, or La Cala and tell them you wish to register to vote.  Make sure you take your passport (and just in case, any other paperwork or identification you may have) with you.

You only have until 30th January to register, so do it as soon as possible.

The local elections will take place on May 26th of this year. Postal voting is complicated, so you really need to be here if you wish to vote.  If you need more information, feel free to contact Mijas Matters on mijasmatters@gmail.com and they will help you.

After Brexit, local elections will be the only place where you can use your voice. It makes sense to get involved.

Mijas Costa Election Candidates

There are seven candidates for this year’s Municipal Elections on Mijas Costa.  Most of the websites listed are in Spanish, but your browser should be able to translate for you.
