Horse drawn carriages will no longer be seen on the streets of Malaga city.  On Monday the city Mayor announced the immediate ban and confirmed an agreement had been reached with the licensed operators.

Francisco De la Torre said “From today (Monday 6th October), there will no longer be horse drawn carriages used as tourist transport in Malaga. We have taken this step thinking about the welfare and safety of the animals.  The 25 carriages that were still circulating through the city will cease to operate.  The City Council has reached an agreement with the license holders.”

Compensation For Carriage Operators

Each of the operators has been paid €125,380 as compensation for the closure of their businesses.  There were 25 licensed operators and 61 horses working in the city.

The future of the 61 working horses has not yet been decided.  Spain’s “Animalist Party” PACMA is demanding that the horses are given a dignified retirement, and has suggested the creation of municipal spaces where the horses could live.  PACMA has also offered to assist with relocating some of the horses to private sanctuaries and rescue centres.
