Migrants Target Costa Del Sol – holiday makers have captured footage of 20 illegal migrants arriving by boat
Migrants Target Costa Del Sol
The Guardia Civil have increased boat patrols along the Costa Del Sol after a British couple staying in a hotel between Benalmadena and Fuengirola filmed migrants landing a dinghy and running up the beach. The couple were staying at the Hotel Holiday Hydros. Their video clearly shows migrants landing on a tourist beach and then sprinting off in different directions. The men were clutching backpacks and some belongings.
It´s not yet clear where these migrants have arrived from, or what their intentions are. Some have suggested that they may have links to organised terrorist groups like ISIS whilst other are saying that they are desperate people fleeing violence and persecution in their homeland.
The man, 25 years old, said: ‘My girlfriend was on the balcony first and she saw the boat come in. At first she thought it was kids on a school trip. They [the migrants] were packed into the boat. She said they looked really happy and were smiling. Then she called me and said “come and see this” because as soon as they started running it looked strange. They were running the up the beach, across the road and over the railway tracks. It was quite shocking to see. I’d never seen anything like it before.”
It´s thought that 210,643 migrants and refugees have arrived in Europe by sea so far this year. The main route being travelled is from Turkey into Greece and Italy. In comparison, there were an estimated 146,083 arrivals across the Mediterranean and along the Western African routes between January 1 and June 30 last year.
