Arsonists Target Gays On Costa Del Sol

A number of fires have been deliberately started in woodland areas, frequented by gay people. An anonymous source said “The fires are being started by local people, who want to stop gay men using the areas for cruising and other anti-social activities”. The most recent fire was started in Arraijanal, on the outskirts of Torremolinos.

Homophobic Protests

It was thought the fires were being started in protest at environmental protection measures, which are being put in place to safeguard local wildlife. However, Mari Cruz Torres from the Ciriana Association says “We knew that the fires were lit by locals, but we thought it was because of us, asking for the protection of the area – but it is a homophobic issue. They want to kick gays out of there.”

The group has now launched an awareness campaign to reduce homophobic attacks.
