Thomas Cook Customers Stranded On The Costa Del Sol

Thousands of people have been left stranded on the Costa Del Sol after the collapse of Thomas Cook yesterday.  Malaga airport is reporting confusion and congestion as holiday makers try to find alternative ways to return to the UK.  Keep up to date with the latest flight times at Malaga airport here.  We’ve been finding out the answers to your questions.

Will I have to pay to return to the UK?

No, is the simple answer.  If you booked a package holiday, you are covered by ATOL and a replacement flight will be sourced and paid for on your behalf.  Please do not travel to Malaga airport until you receive notification about your new flight.

If you bought your flights separately, your travel insurance will probably cover the cost of your return to the UK.  If you’re not covered, you will need to pay for your own return flight and claim the cost of this back from the government as part of their Operation Matterhorn plan.

Should I pay more for my hotel?

No.  Some hotels have been demanding that guests pay more to finish their holiday or to remain in the hotel whilst new flights are arranged.  Advice from the Civil Aviation Authority is that you call them on +44 1753 330 330, as they are making arrangements directly with hotels.  Do not pay more money to your hotel.

When will I get home?

Most travellers are being returned to the UK on the day or their original scheduled flights, though some may be experiencing delays.  The repatriation will be in effect for two weeks from today, within this time all stranded holiday makers should have been returned to the UK.
