New Speed Limits And Penalties In Spain
New speed limits are now in place throughout Spain. The changes came into effect on Tuesday 11th May. Previously the speed limit in towns and cities (unless otherwise signalled) was 50km/h. Now this has been reduced to 30km/h. The new limit applies to roads with a single lane of traffic in each direction. Roads with just one lane and a footpath now have a 20km/h speed limit. Urban roads with a duel carriageway have a speed limit of 50km/h.
Speed limits on motorways are not being changed. These remain set between 80km/h and 120km/h on an autopista and autovia – governed according to signage. The AP-7 running along the Costa Del Sol is an autopista, and the A7 highway is an autovia.
Speeding Fines
Penalties for exceeding the new speed limits range from €100 to €600. Fines are now being applied as follows:
- Up to 20km/h over the limit – €100
- Up to 30km/h over the limit – €300
- Up to 40km/h over the limit – €400
- Up to 50km/h over the limit – €500
- Over 51km/h above the limit – €600
