Historic Mijas Costa Towers Being Restored
Two of the four historic watchtowers in Mijas Costa are now being restored. €326,000 is being spent on cleaning, repairing, and waterproofing the local landmarks. The towers at Torrenueva and Calaburras are currently being restored. The towers at Torrequebrada and Calahonda are also being lined up for restoration in the future.
The restoration of the watchtowers will enhance the historical heritage of the Costa Del Sol. Councillor Laura Morena says “We are not going to stop until we recover all the historical heritage we have in our municipality, because it is very important to know our history and be able to transmit it to future generations; after all, it is our legacy.”
Defending The Coastline
The watchtowers were built in the 16th century to defend the coastline from invaders. If enemy boats were spotted, fires would be lit on top of the towers and the smoke would alert local military units.
