Spain Enters Three Days Of National Mourning
Flags across Spain are flying at half mast as the nation enters an official three day period of national mourning following Wednesday’s catastrophic high speed train collision near Urda (Toledo).
Decreed by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and backed by regional governments across the country, the mourning period runs from Thursday October 29th until midnight on Saturday October 31st.
Protocol and Public Tributes
The official decree imposes strict protocols across government institutions, civil offices, and public services:
- All Spanish, regional, and municipal flags outside public buildings, government headquarters, and military installations will remain lowered to half mast throughout the three days.
- Town halls and regional administrations have suspended all celebratory institutional public receptions, and cultural events.
- Public workers and local councils gathered in town squares nationwide at noon on Thursday to observe a minute of silence in memory of the 69 victims and in solidarity with their families.
Impact on Halloween and Local Festivities
Because the official mourning period coincides directly with the long holiday weekend, town halls across Spain have announced the immediate cancellation or postponement of council funded Halloween events. Municipal Halloween parades, outdoor events, street markets, and youth concerts scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night have been called off. Private venues and businesses may continue to operate at their own discretion.
The mourning period will officially conclude at midnight on Saturday. As a result, traditional observances for All Saints’ Day on Sunday November 1st will proceed as planned, with family cemetery visits and religious services taking place under heightened solemnity nationwide.
Investigations Continue
Emergency services remain active at the derailment site in Urda as investigators work to reconstruct the timeline of the disaster, which claimed 69 lives and left around 180 injured. Transport Minister Óscar Puente confirmed that a full technical investigation is underway into signal control failures along the Madrid – Andalucia high speed line.
Across Andalucia, regional President Juanma Moreno expressed the collective grief of the community, offering full medical and logistical help to support victims and families affected by the tragedy.
