British Mother’s Baby Tests Positive For Cocaine On The Costa Del Sol
Costa Del Sol police have arrested a British mother after her 8 month old baby tested positive for cocaine. Police were called when a couple were spotted lighting a fire beneath a tree where they were camping in the dunes at Cabopino. Officers found the couple next to an uninsured car with an expired MOT in a small tent, with their 8 month old baby.
Police were concerned about their living conditions, and suspected the baby was malnourished. Officers took the baby to the Las Albarizas Health Centre near Marbella, before the infant was transferred to the Hospital Costa Del Sol. Doctors say the baby is underweight, and took a blood sample for testing. The results tested positive for cocaine.

The couple were found camping in the dunes at Cabopino.
The 25 year old British mother was arrested along with her 43 year old Spanish partner. The baby is being cared for by local pediatric services. The couple have been released on bail following a closed hearing in Marbella. The baby has been taken into emergency care.
Cocaine can be passed to a baby from the mother’s breast milk. Cocaine is “lipophilic,” meaning it dissolves easily in fats. Since breast milk has a high fat content, cocaine can concentrate there at levels higher than those found in the mother’s own bloodstream. Infants lack the specific liver enzymes needed to break down cocaine quickly. Even a small amount in breast milk can lead to a positive test and cause symptoms like extreme irritability, tremors, or vomiting.
