A British pensioner is warning other expats to be on the look out for a man pretending to be from the Spanish electricity firm Endesa. The man made off with over €10,000 worth of her property and cash after talking his way into her home in Estepona.
Charming
88 year old Patricia Vause said that the man was charming and utterly convincing. She said that he seemed to know how much electricity she was using, his English was excellent, he was very polite and charming, and had a convincing back story about his studies at a college in Birmingham.
Theft
The thief told Ms. Vause that he was from Endesa, and would be able to save her money on her bills. She took him to the meter in the basement where he made some adjustments and a red light came on. The man then said he needed to test some appliances, and asked her to watch the red light and shout up to him when it went out.
After ten minutes the light was still on and Ms. Vause shouted to the man. There was no reply. She went upstairs to discover that he had stolen her Rolex, some gold bracelets, a sovereign ring which was given to her at birth, a 22 diamond eternity ring, and €900 of her savings. In total, the items are worth over €10,000.
Police
Patricia Vause, originally from York, has reported the incident to the police who have told her that they are now investigating.
