Cartama Council Calls For Emergency Declaration
Cartama in Malaga Province has been hit hard by flooding following the torrential rain brought by Storm Dana this week. The town council has now asked central government to declare the area a Civil Protection Emergency.
Civil Protection Emergency
A Civil Protection Emergency refers to situations that pose a significant threat to public safety and require coordinated action from various authorities. The Spanish government has a civil protection system designed to prevent, prepare for, and respond to these emergencies. Local and regional authorities work together with national agencies to manage the situation, ensure public safety, provide assistance to affected individuals, and coordinate recovery efforts.
Rural And Residential Areas Flooded
When the flooding hit on Tuesday 29th October the Guadalhorce river overflowed in parts of the municipality, flooding some residential areas including Estación de Cártama and leaving agricultural land under water. More than 100 litres of rain per square metre fell furing the storm. The river reached a height of 6 metres as it passed through Estación de Cártama making the A-7057 road impassable.
Water supplies to residential areas in Cartama have been affected by the flooding, and residents have also reported flooded basements. Many of the rural roads have been destroyed and there are reports of sink holes appearing. The council are also requesting financial aid from central government to assist residents with the costs of repairs and replacing property, and also for the agricultural and livestock sectors.
