Costa Del Sol Jellyfish Warning

Marine experts are warning of high numbers of jellyfish along the Costa Del Sol this week.  Bathers are being warned to be vigilant and avoid areas where jellyfish can be seen.  Whilst jellyfish are being observed in most places on the Costa Del Sol, the numbers are thought to be particularly high between Marbella and Manilve, especially around Estepona.

Species of jellyfish found in the area this week may include pelagia noctiluca, also known as the “Purple Stinger”.  Whilst not dangerous, it can deliver a sting which is painful and causes irritation for several days.  These jellyfish are bioluminescent, meaning they can appear to glow in the dark.

Treating Jellyfish Stings

If an allergic reaction to a jellyfish sting is observed, please seek medical attention immediately.

For less severe reactions there are steps you can take to ease the jellyfish sting.

  • Remove any tentacles attached to your skin with tweezers or whilst wearing gloves
  • If possible rinse the affected area with vinegar for 30 seconds
  • Soak the area in warm (but not scalding) water for 20 minutes
  • Take oral anti-histamines, available over the counter at most pharmacies in Spain
  • Treat the area with hydrocortisone cream
  • Apply ice packs to ease itching over the coming days
