Devastation In La Cala As Christmas Lights Destroyed

La Cala De Mijas has been devastated by a freak weather event which has destroyed the new Christmas lights, and caused chaos in the town.  Spain’s national weather agency (AEMET) has reported that a small tornado may have happened early on Tuesday morning (16th December), though this has not been verified yet.

Hurricane Force Winds Hit La Cala

Wind speeds in La Cala De Mijas reached 130 km/h as wooden huts were overturned, decorative small boats were ripped from the sand, and the Christmas lights were torn from their supports.  8 vehicles have been damaged. Fortunately no injuried have been reported.

Mijas repair crews are trying to salvage and repair as much as possible but have not been able to say when the lights will be operational again.

Freak Weather Impossible To Predict

The mini tornado was so localised that weather experts are saying it would have been impossible to predict.  Jesús Riesco is the Director of the Malaga branch of AEMET, he expains “it has such small dimensions and is so localised, it is impossible to detect it in our systems, because it has been a hyper-localised thing.  The only thing we know is that it was a convective phenomenon, and now we will have to determine whether it was a waterspout or a small tornado, whether it entered from the sea or whether it came from the land.”
