Earthquakes And 100mm Of Rain Hit The Costa Del Sol
Storm Leonardo has hit the Costa Del Sol leaving reservoirs at bursting point, multiple major roads closed, 1500 people isolated in Casares, and three small earthquakes have been felt yesterday. 160mm of rainfall has been recorded so far in Malaga province.
Three earthquakes were felt in Gaucín, in the Serranía de Ronda yesterday (4th February). The first happened at 2.34pm, measuring 2.4 on the Richter scale. The second was a 2.5 quake at 4.50pm, and the third earthquake measured 2.3 at 4.55pm. The Mayor confirmed that no injuries were reported, saying he’d been advised that the tremors were caused by underground water movement following the torrential rain.

1500 People Cut Off In Casares
In Casares 1500 people have been completely cut off due to the severe weather from Storm Leonardo. The Guadiaro river has burst it’s banks, forcing closure of the town’s main road, the A1202. Power cuts have left residents without internet access and with restricted mobile phone reception. 20 people have been evacuated from their homes in El Secadero, they are currently sheltering at the Ochomin hostel.
Reservoirs Releasing Water Into Rivers
The dams at Casasola in Almogia, La Concepcion near Istan, and Conde del Guadalhorce in Ardales have all been opened for controlled water release.
The reservoir at El Limonero has also exceeded it’s capacity. The floodgates have been opened to relieve pressure on the reservoir. The overflow is being directed to the Guadalmedina river. El Limonero primarily operates to regulate water flowing into this river and protect the local area from flooding.
