Eldorado Sets Ready For Regeneration. The derelict town built by the BBC in Spain is set to become a leisure and tourism complex.
Eldorado Sets Ready For Regeneration
When the BBC axed it’s “soap in the sun” in 1993 it left behind a purpose built town where Eldorado was filmed. Many of the sets had running water and electricity, they were closer to being “real buildings” than any other soap sets used at the time. Since then the site (which has audio and video editing facilities) has been used as a tourist attraction, a hotel, a paintballing site, and occasionally for filming, though none of these ventures has proved hugely successful.
The facility is located close to Coin in Andalucia. The countil have now put a license out to tender to run and redevelop the largely derelict site. The 137,000 square metre area must be redeveloped as a leisure site, and facilities for audio and visual production must be included and maintained. Plans for the site iallow for a luxury hotel, sports facilities, and cultural attractions. The council are offering a 50 year lease.
Recently the sets have been used to film music videos, and the new HBO series “His Dark Materials”.
