Tunnel Linking Spain And Morocco Delayed Until 2040
Ambitious plans to construct a tunnel between Punta Paloma near Cadiz and Punta Malabata near Tangier in Morocco have been delayed. It had been hoped that the 42km tunnel may have been completed in time for the World Cup in 2030, but Spain’s Transport Minister Oscar Puente says the project has been delayed by unforseen technical difficulties.
Studies are now being conducted with regard to the complex geology of the Straits of Gibraltar. A study of the Eurasian and African tectonic plates and seizmic activity along the underwater fault line is also taking place.
20 Minutes Travel Time
The tunnel could be completed by 2040, and will be exclusively for rail travel. It will be 42km long, with 30km of tunnel submerged at depths of up to 475 metres. The journey would take roughly 20 minutes. A final budget hasn’t been determined, but experts believe the tunnel will cost up to €10 billion.
