The former Costa Del Sol businessman was found not guilt of murder, but guilty of manslaughter.  45 year old Dave Mahon had stabbed and killed Dean.  Mahon said he had not intended to harm Dean, who “walked into the knife”.  The scientific evidence didn´t dispute this, though the prosecution claimed that Mahon was drunk and agitated.  After the stabbing, Mahon left the father of one to die in the street.  Dean´s father has said that “I wouldn´t accept his apology under any circumstances” though Dean´s mother Audrey says she has forgiven Mahon for killing her son.

Audrey Mahon said her life had become a living nightmare since Dean’s death, and although he had his problems she recalled his “cheeky grin” and “heart of gold”.  In her victim impact statement, she said she had lost both her children and did not think she was strong enough to cope with losing her husband.

Dean’s aunt Christine Kenny thanked their family, friends, Coolock garda station, their legal team and the victim’s support group at the Central Criminal Court.  “Dean’s death has been a huge loss to our lives and we will never forgive the man that killed Dean. He has put us through hell and back.  We hope that people will come forward now and give the information that’s needed as regards Amy. She needs to be found and we still have that road ahead of us and we will keep fighting for her. There’s always hope,” she added.  “We will fight to the bitter end to get truth for Amy. Hopefully somebody will come forward now with information of where Amy was that night and pleased God we find her,” she said.

Dean´s sister Amy Fitzpatrick went missing after a night baby sitting with a friend on New Years Eve on the Costa Del Sol in 2008.  Amy left her friend´s house in Riviera Del Sol just after 10pm and hasn´t been seen since.
