Three parks in Mijas have been closed by the council whilst fumigation work was taking place.  Mijas and Fuengirola are currently on high alert after the West Nile Virus was detected in mosquitos caught in traps last week.  The fumigation will reduce the number of mosquitos which can transmit the virus in these public places.

The parks which were closed for treatment are Las Lagunas Park, Parque 3 De Abril, and Parque El Abuelo.  The spaces all reopened to the public today (Thursday 30th July).

What Is West Nile Virus?

West Nile virus is a mosquito borne pathogen primarily spread to humans and animals through the bite of infected Culex mosquitoes. The virus cycle originates in wild birds, with mosquitoes acting as carriers.  It cannot be spread directly from person to person through casual contact or touch.

The Culex mosquito transmits the West Nile Virus.

West Nile Virus Symptoms

Around 80% of people infected show no symptoms at all.  About 20% develop West Nile Fever, which is mild with flu like symptoms.  These may include fever, headache, body aches, fatigue, and occasionally a skin rash or nausea. Most people recover fully within a few days to weeks.

In fewer than 1% of cases, the virus can cause severe neuroinvasive conditions such as encephalitis or meningitis. These complications can cause high fever, neck stiffness, confusion, or muscle weakness and require immediate medical attention.

Elderly individuals and those with compromised immune systems face the highest risk of severe illness.

Reduce The Risk

Health experts are recommending practical daily steps to reduce mosquito bites.

  • Apply Repellent: Use registered insect repellents containing active ingredients like DEET or Icaridin, particularly during peak mosquito activity between dusk and dawn.
  • Cover Up: Wear light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and trousers when outdoors in the evening.
  • Eliminate Standing Water: Regularly drain plant saucers, buckets, pet water bowls, and clogged gutters, as stagnant water serves as the primary breeding ground for mosquitoes.
