Sanchez Seeking One Month Extension To State Of Alarm
The current state of alarm in Spain is due to expire on the 24th May. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced that he is now seeking a final extension to the state of alarm, for a period of one month. Previous extensions have all been for two weeks, though the Prime Minister has said that this latest plan may be more flexible and will not be determined by political motivations.
In this new extension, Prime Minister Sanchez said that it would only be the health ministry that maintains its authority over the Spain’s autonomous regions. Control over Interior, Transport and Defence would be returned to the regional governments.
The Prime Minister is facing opposition to another extension.
The Prime Minister is facing growing opposition to any further extensions to the lockdown. Oppostion parties on the right still say that the state of alarm should be replaced with less strict legislation and the conservative PP party promised to vote against him.
Coronavirus In Andalucia
The Malaga area is now in phase one of the easing of the lockdown. In Andalucia there have been 16,432 cases of the coronavirus, with 1358 fatalities. The total number of infections in the Malaga area is 4122, with 278 recorded deaths.
