Spain Accused Of Failing Refugees

Spain Accused Of Failing Refugees – Spain has taken in 1% of the total number it agreed to accomodate

Spain Accused Of Failing Refugees

A new report by Oxfam is claiming that Spain has so far only taken in 1% of the 15,000 refugees which it promised to take.  As part of an EU Redistribution plan to ease pressure on Greece and Italy, Spain agreed to take in 15,888 people but has only accepted 201 at this time.

The report is titled ‘Spain has failed in response to the global refugee crisis’.  It criticises a “lack of political will”, despite Spain having the resources to assist.  Spain is one of the world’s top twenty economies.

Border Fences

Every year, Spain spends €40 million on replacing and repairing border fences in Melilla and Ceuta.  The report compares this with the €16.3 million spent by Spain on the CETI refugee centres.  Oxfam is urging Spain to make radical changes to it´s immigration policy.

Illegal Migrants

Recently some British holiday makers photographed 20 illegal migrants arriving on a beach near Benalmadena.  You can read about that here.  In June, 26 illegal migrants were rescued from a boat near Malaga  You can read that news story here.
