Alhaurin Council Taking Action Against Mosquitos
Fumigation has begun along the Guadalhorce river area to kill mosquitos which are breeding in the area and could potentially spread the dangerous West Nile virus. Most of the action is being taken around Campanillas where irrigation channels are also being cleaned. Alhaurin De La Torre council are taking preventative measures after the virus was detected in samples of mosquitos taken from the area. There have been 70 confirmed cases of the virus in Andalucia.
Is West Nile Virus Dangerous?
Yes, it can be dangerous to humans. In about 80% of cases those infected may not experience any symptoms but 20% of those infected could develop West Nile fever. Symptoms include fever, headaches, body aches, fatigue, nausea, rashes and swollen lymph nodes. In about 1% of cases the virus can cause serious neurological complications like encephalitis, meningitis, or paralysis. These cases can lead to long-term disabilities or even death.
Reduce Risk Of Catching West Nile Virus
To prevent West Nile Virus it is essential to reduce the risk of mosquito bites, as the virus is primarily transmitted through infected mosquitoes. Here are some key prevention measures:
- Use Insect Repellents: Apply insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus when outdoors, especially during peak mosquito activity at dawn and dusk.
- Wear Protective Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks to minimize exposed skin.
- Avoid Peak Mosquito Activity: Mosquitoes that carry the virus are most active during dawn and dusk, so limit outdoor activities during these times.
- Eliminate Standing Water: Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Regularly empty containers like flower pots, buckets, or bird baths where water can accumulate. Ensure that gutters are clean and water drains properly.
- Install Window and Door Screens: Use screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of your home.
- Use Mosquito Nets: If sleeping outdoors or in areas without proper screening, use mosquito nets to prevent bites.
