Costa Del Sol Recovering From Power Cut

The Costa Del Sol is recovering from the shocking power blackout which hit Spain yesterday.  At 12.33pm (on Monday 28th April) the electricity supply for the whole of Spain and some parts of Portugal failed.  The blackout caused mobile phones to be useless, many people were unable to get online, train services ground to a halt, roads faced disruption as traffic signals failed, schools were forced to close, most shops had to close, and hospital services were also disrupted.  Malaga airport was able to continue operating flights with some delays, though the car parks were inaccesible.

Power was restored slowly beginning with some areas in Malaga and Alhaurin.  By 3am the electricity was back online for most of us here on the Costa Del Sol.

Malaga Train

200 passengers were stranded at the María Zambrano train station in Malaga.

Rail Passengers Stranded

In Malaga around 200 train passengers were stranded at the María Zambrano train station overnight.  The Red Cross supplied stretchers and beds for those stuck in the train station.  Services resumed at around 9am today.

Police Officers Recalled For Duty

The number of police officers on duty was doubled after the Prime Minister declared a level 3 state of emergency in Andalucia.  Officers patrolled town centres to discourage looting and offer assitance to people in difficulty.  There were no reported incidents of looting or theft in the Malaga area.

The number of police officers on duty was doubled.

Power Cut Cause Still Unknown

The cause of the biggest power blackout ever in Spain hasn’t been determined yet, though the government have ruled out a cyber attack. Portuguese energy company REN (Rede Eletrica Nacional) said the power cuts may have been caused by “rare atmospheric phenomenon”. Their statement says“due to extreme temperature variations in the interior of Spain, there were anomalous oscillations in the very high voltage lines (400 KV), a phenomenon known as ‘induced atmospheric vibrations. These oscillations caused synchronisation failures between the electrical systems, leading to successive disturbances across the interconnected European network.”

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said today that the government is focussed on making sure a power cut like this “never takes place again.”
