Face Masks Must Be Worn In Public

The government in Spain has announced that it is now required to wear a face mask in public.  From Thursday 21st May it will be necessary for everyone over the age of 6 to wear a mask in situations where it isn’t possible to maintain a distance of two metres from other people.

The rules mean masks must be worn on all public transport, public spaces indoors where social distancing is not possible, and public spaces outdoors where social distancing is not possible.    Government official Fernando Simón advises carrying a mask at all times, saying that it’s convenient to have a mask in your pocket.

Exceptions To The Rule

Besides children under 6, there are some exceptions to the new rule.  Masks do not have to be worn by people with respiratory problems, or by people with a disability, illness, or behavioural issues which would make wearing a mask impractical.

The government hopes that by making masks compulsory the spread of the virus will continue to slow now that most parts of the country are in phase one.  A statement says that the masks “block the emission of infected drops, very important when it is not possible to maintain the safety distance.”
