Fury Over New Toll Charges On The A7
Motorists are furious after finding out that one of the busiest roads on the Costa Del Sol is to become a toll road. From midday today drivers will be charged up to €10 to travel on the road which links all of our main cities and towns. For several months roadworks have been taking place whilst toll booths and number plate recognition cameras were being installed.
Despite opposition to the charges from motorists, the Andalucia Road Safety Executive insists that introducing toll charges is the only way to reduce congestion and cover carriageway maintenance costs. Luis Ladron says “the A7 has been a problem for motorists for years. Almost every day there is a huge traffic jam on some section of this road between Torremolinos and Estepona.”

The new tolls are designed to prevent traffic jams like this on the Costa Del Sol.
Senor Ladron is confident that the new tolls will reduce traffic. “We’ve seen over the last few years that the area’s existing toll road, the AP-7, is almost always deserted. This proves beyond a doubt that tolls are the best way to cut congestion. I’m confident that the introduction of tolls on the A7 will reduce the number of road users immediately”.
The introducton of toll charges is being welcomed by local businesses. Derek Trotter from the local Purchasing Retail And Trading body says “Deterring drivers from using the A7 will be a great boost for businesses, as people will avoid travelling and make most of their purchases in local shops.”
