Solar Powered Bins For The Costa Del Sol
State of the art solar powered rubbish bins are being installed on the streets of Malaga. €670,000 is being spent on 120 litter bins, which works out at an eye watering €5500 for each bin. Despite criticism of the cost of buying and installing these new bins, the city council insist that they will save time and money in the long run.
Five Times More Waste
The new bins contain a compacting mechanism which is activated when sensors detect that a certain level of rubbish has been collected. This allows each bin to hold 600 litres of waste, considerably more than the 120 litres which a traditional bin holds. The bins also have an ashtray which can hold 2000 cigarette ends.
Each bin is equipped with a sim card which notifies the collection company when it reaches it’s capacity. The council have said this will save time and fuel costs, and make the litter collection process more efficient.
