Torremolinos Installs UV Information Systems
New displays have been installed on four beaches around Torremolinos which show the current UV intensity level. The screens operate a traffic light style system, with colour coded UV levels – from low intensity in green to maximum risk in purple.
The local council introduced the digital screens this week across the municipality’s busiest stretches of sand, including Los Álamos, Playamar, El Bajondillo, and La Carihuela. The initiative aims to raise immediate awareness about sun safety as summer temperatures and visitor numbers are rising along the Costa del Sol.
How the System Works
The real time electronic displays are synchronized with local meteorological data to provide instant visual updates.
🟢 Green (Low Risk): Minimal protection required.
🟡 Yellow (Moderate Risk): Standard sun safety advised; seek shade during midday hours.
🟠 Orange (High Risk): Sun protection is necessary; reduce direct sun exposure between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
🔴 Red (Very High Risk): High danger of sunburn; generous sunscreen application and hats are essential.
🟣 Purple (Extreme Risk): Maximum danger; beachgoers are strongly urged to avoid direct exposure and seek immediate cover.
A Proactive Approach to Health
With the Costa del Sol boasting over 300 days of sunshine a year, local health authorities have praised the move as a vital tool in preventing skin damage and heatstroke.
A spokesperson for Torremolinos Council stated that the initiative is all about blending local tourism with public safety. “We want everyone to enjoy our world-class beaches, but we want them to do it safely. By putting this information directly on the sand where people are sunbathing, it serves as a visual reminder to reapply sunscreen and protect vulnerable family members.”
The UV displays are part of a broader “Safe Swimming” and beach modernization campaign in Torremolinos, which also includes QR codes on lifeguard towers providing real time sea conditions and swimming safety guidelines.
