Spanish Army Preparing To Tackle WildFires

Every summer Andalucia experiences wildfires, some of which can be devastating.  The Spanish army’s special emergency response unit is currently preparing to tackle the blazes which could break out this summer, with a series of training exersizes.  349 soldiers, 6 trucks, 30 fire engines, and 3 diggers are currently training at several locations including Las Navetas in Ronda and the Celemín reservoir near Cadiz.  Several planes and a helicopter from the Spanish air force are also taking part in the exersizes.

Wildfires can be caused by several factors.  These include:

Lightning: Lightning strikes during thunderstorms can ignite fires when they hit dry vegetation.
Spontaneous Combustion: Decomposing organic material can generate heat and ignite under the right conditions.
Campfires: Improperly extinguished campfires or burning debris can spark wildfires.
Arson: Deliberate setting of fires by individuals for various reasons.
Equipment Use: Machinery, like chainsaws or lawnmowers, can create sparks in dry conditions.
Discarded Cigarettes: Carelessly discarded cigarettes can ignite dry vegetation.
Power Lines: Electrical equipment failures or downed power lines can start fires.
Outdoor Burning: Uncontrolled agricultural burning or prescribed burns getting out of control.
