Spain’s Electric Shock As Power Prices Surge

Electricity prices is Spain are surging following the outbreak of war in Iran.  The wholesale cost of electricy has jumped from €15 per megawatt hour on the 1st of March to €119.42 per mwh on the 10th March. The price rices are being driven by the escalating cost of oil which has risen by 70%.

Household energy bills here on the Costa Del Sol are seeing an average increase of 15% compared to costs this time last year.

3 Simple Ways to Lower Your Spanish Electric Bill

  • Master the “Valle” (Off-Peak) Hours.
Most Spanish tariffs (especially the PVPC) are significantly cheaper during “Valle” hours (usually 12:00am to 8:00am and all day on weekends/holidays).

Top Tip: Set your dishwasher or washing machine to run at 7:00 AM before you head out—it’s the easiest way to slash your daily costs.

  • Check Your “Potencia Contratada”.
  • Look at your bill for the Potencia (kW) charge. Many expats in Spain are paying for a higher capacity than they actually need.

Top Tip: If your “lead” (breaker) never trips even when the AC and oven are on, you might be over-paying. Reducing your contracted power by just 1.1kW can save you around €50 per year.

  • The “Ghost” Power Drain.
Electronic “standby” lights on TVs, routers, and kitchen appliances are silent budget killers.

Top Tip: Use a power strip with a switch for your entertainment center. Turning it off at night can reduce your “phantom load” by up to 10% over the month.
