Skywatchers along Spain’s southern coast are in for an extraordinary astronomical double header on Wednesday (12th August). There’ll be a rare solar eclipse in the evening, followed later by the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower.

The partial solar eclipse begins at 7.43pm when the moon starts crossing infront of the sun. The moon will be blocking roughly 95% of the sun at its peak at 8.38pm, creating an eerie twilight before the sun sets fully.

See The Eclipse Safely

To see the eclipse safely, you’ll need to use ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses. Looking directly at a 95% obscured sun without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage.

Shooting Stars

Following the eclipse Earth will pass through the densest section of comet debris that creates the annual Perseid meteor shower. There should be no moonlight intereference, so conditions will be ideal to spot dozens of shooting stars every hour. The meteor shower will peak between 2am and 6am on Thursday (13th August). There could be as many as 100 shooting stars an hour!
