600 Kilos Of Skewered Sardines Being Served In La Cala
On the 1st May La Cala de Mijas celebrates its annual Fiesta De La Sardina. Over 600 kilos of skewered sardines will be served around the the Torreón (The Watchtower) in the center of La Cala. It’s the perfect way to spend the bank holiday. The festival gets going at midday with food and drink, and live music and dancing.
The festival celebrates the humble espeto—sardines skewered on bamboo sticks and grilled over open olive-wood fires in old fishing boats on the sand. It’s a tradition that goes back generations.
